US National Security Advisor to Visit Turkey for Discussions on Syria
US National Security Advisor John Bolton revealed on Friday that he will visit Turkey and Israel in January to discuss Syria as the US troops are leaving the country.
The security situation and next phase of the war on terror will be on top of Bolton’s agenda.
"We will discuss our continued work confronting the security challenges facing allies and partners in the region, including the next phase of the fight against ISIS [Islamic State], as the US begins to bring troops home from Syria," Bolton said on Twitter.
Bolton’s announcement comes days after he visited Iraq alongside President Donald Trump for a few hours. The trip was strongly criticized in Iraq’s political arena as many Shi’ite figures accused the US president of violating Iraq’s sovereignty by traveling to Iraq without meeting with any Iraqi officials.
Last week, Trump announced the plan to withdraw its troops from Syria to the surprise the world. He later said Turkey will finish the job pertaining to the war against the Islamic State (IS).
However, critics slammed the move, arguing that Turkey would target the Syrian Kurds after the US’s green light instead of eliminating IS.
