تم إرساله إلى سوريا من قبل اوسامه بن لادن لتأسيس فرع القاعدة هناك، ما عرف باسم جبهة النصرة.

أصبح زعيمًا لـ هيئة تحرير الشام (Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham / HTS)، وهي جماعة مسلحة في شمال غرب سوريا كانت سابقًا جزءًا من جبهة النصرة.
مع مرور الوقت بنى دورًا سياسيًا وعسكريًا أكبر في الصراع السوري، وتغيّر اسمه في بعض الأخبار إلى أحمد الشرع وهو يُظهر نفسه كقيادي معارض أو سياسي في سوريا.
