In 2017 Iran and Iraq confronted KRG and forced the Kurdish forces out of these areas, KRG urged aid from the US but Trump looked the other way by saying “why should we help the Kurds they didn’t help us in WWII at Normandy”. 🧐

The dark Green areas are Kurdish areas outside of KRG, an article in Iraq constitution article 140 calls for a referendum to be held in these areas to see if they want to be part of Iraq or Kurdistan, knowing it will lose Iraq never implemented its own constitution.
