With the start of the US and Israeli military attack on Iran and the escalation of military conflicts in the region, concerns about the health of prisoners, especially political prisoners, have increased significantly.
Numerous reports have been published about the intensification of the security environment, increased repression, and restrictions on the flow of information in Iranian prisons. In addition, widespread internet shutdowns, restrictions on phone calls, and visits with families and lawyers have added to concerns about the condition and fate of prisoners.
According to confirmed reports, at least five political prisoners, namely Babak Alipour, Pouya Ghobadi, Mohammad Taghavi, Akbar Daneshvarkar, and Amirhossein Hatami, have been executed in secret in recent days without prior notice. At the same time, a number of political prisoners, including Kurdish prisoners, who have previously been sentenced to death, are at imminent risk of execution. The cases of a number of other prisoners are being re-examined after violating their death sentences and continue to face the risk of being re-sentenced.
Currently, seven Kurdish political prisoners, namely Pakhshan Azizi, Hatem Ozdemir, Yousef Ahmadi, Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, Nasser Bekerzadeh, Rauf Sheikhmaroufi, and Mohammad Faraji, who were unfairly sentenced to death by the Islamic Revolutionary Courts in Tehran, Mahabad, Urmia, and Sanandaj on charges including “rebellion” and “moharebeh,” are being held in Evin, Urmia, Sanandaj, and Bukan prisons. According to available information, the death sentences of at least four of these prisoners have been confirmed by the Supreme Court and are at risk of being executed.
The cases of Varisheh Moradi, Ali (Soran) Ghasemi, Pejman Soltani, Kaveh Salehi, and Rozgar Beigzadeh Babamiri have also been referred to the Islamic Revolutionary Courts for retrial after the Supreme Court overturned their death sentences. These individuals, who were previously sentenced to death in an unfair process, are still being held in Evin and Urmia Central Prisons without trial and face charges including “rebellion,” “corruption on earth,” and “war on terror.” Given the history of the case, there is a risk of re-issuing death sentences against them.
