Rudaw’s chief UN correspondent, Namo Abdulla, asked UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric about the case of 27-year-old Kurdish inmate Naser Bekrzadeh after an Iranian court upheld his death sentence, prompting Dujarric to reiterate that the United Nations opposes the death penalty “in all circumstances” and continues to advocate for a global moratorium, as Bekrzadeh, held in Urmia Prison, has pleaded for international help.

The disturbing transfer of three political prisoners sentenced to death from Urmia prison to an unknown location.
Reports indicate that on Thursday morning, Nasser Bekerzadeh, Karim Yaghoubpour, and Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, three political prisoners sentenced to death, were transferred separately from Urmia prison to unknown locations and have not yet returned to their cells.
This sudden and unexplained transfer has greatly increased concerns about the imminent execution of the three prisoners.
Meanwhile, previously, Amir Raisian, a lawyer, had announced that on April 20, Branch 39 of the Supreme Court, contrary to its previous process of overturning the death sentence twice, this time confirmed the third death sentence issued by the Urmia Revolutionary Court without resolving the previous objections.
