SAVAK and the German intelligence and security service during Hitler's time. When Reza Qazzaq was cooperating with Hitler, he received a book, but he could not establish this organization because the Allies soon attacked Reza Qazzaq's regime and two Indian soldiers arrested him in Tehran, took him to the island of Mauritius and imprisoned him there. Then the Allies returned his son to Iran and Mohammad Reza established SAVAK based on Hitler's intelligence and security service. This organization treated people very harshly and violently, especially with ethnic minorities in Iran.
While Reza Shah Pahlavi (reigned 1925–1941) was a noted admirer of Adolf Hitler’s "strongman" leadership, there is no historical evidence that he "copied" Hitler’s intelligence services (the Gestapo or Abwehr) to build his own. His intelligence apparatus and state control evolved through different influences:
Admiration, Imitation: Reza Shah admired Hitler’s ability to modernize Germany and challenge British and Soviet influence—powers that had long interfered in Iran. However, his own internal security focused on tribal suppression and centralizing the state rather than adopting Nazi intelligence models.
The Aryan Connection: Reza Shah did lean into "Aryan" branding, officially changing the country’s name from Persia to Iran (meaning "Land of the Aryans") in 1935 to emphasize ancient roots shared with Germanic peoples.
The SAVAK Misconception: People often confuse Reza Shah with his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who created the notorious intelligence agency SAVAK in 1957. Even then, SAVAK was established with significant help from the U.S. CIA and Israeli Mossad, not Nazi Germany.
The primary intelligence service of Adolf Hitler and the SS was the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), which translates to "Security Service". It was founded in 1931 by Heinrich Himmler, who placed Reinhard Heydrich in command, to act as the official intelligence and investigation agency for the Nazi Party. Key details regarding the SD and related intelligence structures:
Role of the SD: The SD was tasked with identifying "enemies of the Nazi regime" and collecting information on political opponents, Jews, and foreign activities.
Reich Security Main Office (RSHA): In September 1939, the SD was merged with the SiPo (Security Police, which included the Gestapo) into the RSHA, a central organization for security and terror.
Inland-SD vs. Ausland-SD: The SD was split into sections: the Inland-SD (internal security) led by Otto Ohlendorf and the Ausland-SD (foreign intelligence) initially led by Heinz Jost and later Walter Schellenberg.
The Abwehr: This was the military intelligence agency of the German military (Wehrmacht), distinct from the SS intelligence (SD), led by Admiral Wilhelm Canaris until 1944.
