 The Chinese People's Liberation Army maintains secrecy regarding its spaceplane currently under development.

 

A new report from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) warns that China could deploy laser weapons and other directed-energy systems in space by the end of this decade, potentially utilizing them for military operations in outer space.

According to OilPrice, the DIA has stated that China may acquire the capability to employ directed-energy weapons in Earth's orbit by the end of the 2020s. The report, released on Sunday, also features a rare image of China’s new reusable spaceplane—a craft designed to return to Earth following a mission and be used again.

The DIA report, titled "Challenges to Security in Space," marks the first instance in which the U.S. government has provided an estimated timeline for China’s development of space-based directed-energy weapons. Beijing currently possesses ground-based directed-energy weapons capable of disrupting satellite operations, degrading their performance, or causing them damage.

It is anticipated that these weapons will become more powerful by the end of the 2020s, extending their reach to satellites located beyond low Earth orbit. New space-based directed-energy weapons would introduce a novel and significantly more dangerous disruptive capability to this arsenal.

However, not all assessments are as alarming as the findings presented by the Defense Intelligence Agency. Victoria Samson, Director of Space Security and Stability at the Secure World Foundation, told the *South China Morning Post*: "I would be very surprised if China had operational space-based laser weapons by the late 2020s."

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is secretive regarding the spaceplane it is developing, but it has been more open about its progress in the field of directed-energy weapons. A report by the Defense Intelligence Agency states: "In January 2021, PLA media announced that laser weapons are on the verge of entering a 'golden age.' They identified 'dazzling'—the temporary blinding of sensors—as one of the many operational applications for laser weapons."
