- As part of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) modernization strategy, China has acquired a powerful duo for heavy conventional strikes: the Xian H-6K strategic bomber and a massive, non-nuclear bomb developed by the state-owned manufacturer NORINCO.
- The Xian H-6K serves as the cornerstone of China’s aerial power projection. Although based on the original design of the Tupolev Tu-16, the aircraft has been completely overhauled. Equipped with modern turbofan engines and state-of-the-art avionics, it boasts an extended operational range of approximately 3,500 kilometers. Its airframe has been reinforced, and its bomb bay modified to accommodate the heaviest munitions in the Chinese arsenal.
- It is specifically for this delivery platform that the arms giant NORINCO designed its own version of the "Mother of All Bombs" (MOAB), created as a direct response to the American GBU-43/B. However, the Chinese weapon differs from its American counterpart in terms of dimensions. More compact, the Chinese bomb is optimized to fit directly into the H-6K’s internal bomb bay, whereas the American version requires a C-130 cargo aircraft for deployment.
- Technically, this multi-ton conventional munition utilizes a satellite guidance system based on China’s Beidou network, ensuring precision within a few meters. Contrary to some rumors, this is not a thermobaric weapon, but rather a fragmentation and massive shockwave bomb designed to saturate fortified areas, destroy reinforced surface structures, or instantly clear military landing zones.
