The White House stated that, thanks to the efforts and mediation of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, a ceasefire agreement has been reached between Russia and Ukraine for the Russian-controlled city of Oleshky, set to take effect on October 29.

This agreement aims to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and prepare for the evacuation of civilians from this frontline city, which is currently facing a severe food and humanitarian crisis. The city’s population—which stood at approximately 24,000 before the war—has dwindled to between 1,700 and 2,000 people (primarily the elderly and about 50 children), largely due to flooding caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.

Under the terms of the agreement, civilian teams from both nations will be permitted to assess the condition of the residents and coordinate the transport necessary for the voluntary relocation of individuals to either Russia or Ukraine. An American media outlet will also be present on-site to document the process. Melania Trump has previously been involved in efforts regarding the return of Ukrainian children. This development comes as President Donald Trump is also pushing for a comprehensive agreement to bring an end to the war.
