Citing several unnamed U.S. officials, CNN reports that the U.S. military has developed new strike plans. Should U.S. President Donald Trump order the resumption of military operations, these plans could potentially include the use of the bomb known as the "Mother of All Bombs" (MOAB) against the energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
A second source told CNN that military plans for striking nuclear facilities—including the "Kuh-e Kolang" site—explicitly contemplate the use of the GBU-43/B bomb. According to the American news outlet, these strikes could take place either before or after the U.S. midterm elections (November 3). Trump has previously dismissed a significant number of CNN’s reports.
CNN notes that the use of the GBU-43/B, or MOAB—the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal—would represent a major escalation of the conflict. However, sources familiar with internal military discussions regarding the potential use of this weapon indicate there are serious doubts as to whether it could achieve the strategic objectives outlined by Trump or alter the balance of the war.
According to CNN, the U.S. military continues to present Trump with various options for potential strikes against designated targets. Nevertheless, some U.S. officials remain skeptical in private circles as to whether the White House possesses a strategy that effectively incorporates these plans and is capable of bringing the war to an end.
According to this American news agency, Trump and his advisors have spent months examining options that could be presented as a "definitive" end to the war.
While some members of the Trump administration have described the war as effectively won, Trump has been more cautious in his recent remarks, stating that the U.S. still has unfinished business in Iran.
Behind the scenes, Trump has also expressed skepticism regarding suggestions from some of his foreign allies to bring U.S. troops home and abandon the war.
