Has the United States bombed Qeshm Island?
On the evening of Sunday, October 4 (Mehr 12), the official state news agency, IRNA, reported that the sound of an explosion had been heard in the vicinity of Qeshm Island.
According to the report, the sound originated from the direction of the sea; so far, there have been no reports of any impact on the island itself, and local sources have not released details regarding the incident.
On Saturday, October 3 (Mehr 11), the Mehr News Agency had also reported hearing explosion sounds coming from the sea near Qeshm Island, raising the possibility that the noises were linked to firing at "violating vessels in the Strait of Hormuz."
On Sunday, October 4, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials, that the United States had withdrawn all its B-1 bombers from Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in the UK and returned them to their home bases in the U.S. This decision was prompted by security concerns regarding a potential plot to attack the base. Prior to the recent withdrawal, 12 B-1 bombers were stationed at Fairford, and the U.S. had utilized the base to launch missions involving B-1 and B-52 bombers against Iran.
In a statement, the Pentagon confirmed that all U.S. bombers stationed at Fairford had returned to their bases in the United States, adding that the aircraft remained ready to conduct strikes from U.S. soil. The decision followed the arrest of six suspects in connection with a suspected plot to attack the Fairford base. According to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. officials were aware of an Iran-linked plot to attack the bombers and kill base personnel. A senior U.S. official stated that a branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had recruited British nationals to carry out the plot. Iran has denied involvement in the incident.
According to the report, five suspects had traveled to Fairford in three white vans. British police stated that no explosives were found in the vehicles, though quantities of fuel were discovered. A sixth individual, holding dual British-Iranian citizenship, was arrested several days later. All six have been released on bail, and the investigation is ongoing. The Wall Street Journal also reported that the United States has deployed F-35 and F-15E fighter jets to Lakenheath Air Base in eastern England, and that the security alert level at the base has been raised.
