Turkey had established an air base in the city of Aleppo, and most of the work of this base was to oppose Israel. Since the Syrian Air Force was under Turkey's control, a number of advanced F-16 fighters were stationed in this base, but Israel destroyed this base in an airstrike.

 

 I flagged this exact scenario when the Mecca pact was signed. It has now played out.

Israel struck the Abu al-Duhur airbase in Idlib early Tuesday. Eight strikes on the runway and storage facilities, roughly 70km from the Turkish border. No casualties.

Netanyahu’s office confirmed it twenty hours later, after the Israeli censor had gagged reporting and the US envoy revealed it first. Syria “was on the verge of breaching” an agreed security status quo “by permitting Turkish troops to deploy at an airbase near Aleppo.” Israel warned Damascus repeatedly. Damascus ignored it.

The timing is the story. The strike came hours after a Turkish military delegation visited the site to assess restoring its runways.

Syria under al-Sharaa is a Turkish proxy in the same way Hezbollah is an IRGC proxy in Lebanon. Ankara backed the offensive that put a former Al Qaeda commander in power, and has been training his army and rebuilding his infrastructure ever since. Gideon Sa’ar puts Turkey’s footprint at 5 percent of Syrian territory. Israel holds one tenth of one percent.

So does this trigger the Mecca pact?

No. And that is the interesting part.

The pact binds Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to treat an attack on one as an attack on all three. Israel did not attack Turkey. It attacked Syria, which is not a signatory, and it struck before Turkish troops deployed. No Turkish personnel. No Turkish casualties. No trigger.

Israel hit that base in the exact window where it could stop the buildup without invoking a nuclear-backed mutual defence obligation.

That is not luck. That is a country that read the agreement.

And look at what Ankara did with the opening it had. It condemned the strike. It called Israel’s justification frivolous. It urged the international community to act. What it did not do was invoke the pact it signed this month.

Trump called that pact a big, bold and important first step. Its first live test arrived within weeks, and Turkey answered with a press release.

The real question is what happens when Turkish boots are actually on the ground.

 News sources reported that Israeli warplanes launched a missile attack on the main runway of the Abu al-Dhuhr military airport in eastern Idlib province. Al Jazeera reported, citing a Syrian military source, that the attack caused heavy material damage to the runway but caused no casualties.

Syrian state media announced that the base had been targeted by eight airstrikes. Local sources also reported that unidentified reconnaissance drones had been flying over the area for several hours before the attack.

Meanwhile, Israeli Army Radio reported that the airstrike came after logistical and military equipment, including radars and drones, from Turkish forces had arrived at the base.

This is the first attack on the Abu al-Dhuhr military airport since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.
