France launches initial airstrikes against IS and promises more to come
French warplanes have struck at Islamic State targets in Iraq. The French President said the Rafale jets had attacked what he called “a logistics depot of the terrorists”:
“Further actions will take place in the coming days with the same goals of weakening this terrorist organisation and helping the Iraqi authorities, which means the Iraqi soldiers and the Peshmerga fighters from Iraqi Kurdistan,” President Francois Hollande said.
It is the first military strikes by France since Hollande announced on Thursday his country would join a US-lead coalition in a campaign against the Islamic extremists.
Islamic State has taken control of large swathes of northern Iraq and Syria in a recent months.
France hosted a conference on Monday of attended by major UN powers, European and Arab states. Its aim was to form an strategy on tackling the extremist group.
