Greece and Turkey are teetering on the brink of war; military tensions between the two nations have peaked, and a situation could erupt at any moment—escalating beyond control into an actual military confrontation.

Tensions between Greece and Turkey have flared up once again. Greece has criticized violations of its airspace, the establishment of Turkish marine parks—which Athens deems illegal—and the deployment of Turkish forces to coastal areas.

In response, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called on Greece to cease the "militarization" of its islands. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also views the situation as a threat to his country's security.

Mary Bussi, a retired professor of international security, has warned of the rising tensions and threatening rhetoric in both nations. She believes that an uncertain regional and international climate could further exacerbate these tensions.

Meanwhile, Greece is focusing on military deterrence. In late August, the country signed a multi-billion-dollar arms deal with Israel. Under the "Achilles Shield" initiative, Greece is acquiring an extensive air defense system and has ramped up investment in its own arms industry.

Greek analyst John Psaropoulos views these moves as defensive from Athens' perspective, noting that regional conflicts have created an environment where war has become normalized. According to him, Greece views Turkey as a "potential Russia" and has long perceived it as a threat.

The dispute between the two countries has a long history. Athens and Ankara have frequently clashed over various issues in the Aegean Sea, particularly since Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus.

Recently, at a UN meeting, Erdogan called on the international community to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized as an independent state only by Turkey.

Territorial waters constitute one of the most significant issues between the neighboring countries of Greece and Turkey. Greece maintains that, under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, it has the right to extend its territorial waters around the Aegean islands to 12 nautical miles.

However, in 1995, the Turkish parliament declared that such a move would be considered a *casus belli* (cause for war). Ankara is concerned that the large number of Greek islands could restrict the movement of Turkish vessels.

Turkey also speaks of "gray zones"—areas where sovereignty over certain uninhabited islands and islets remains undefined. Greece rejects this position.
