Seven Ethiopian armed groups—including Tigrayan forces, Fano nationalists in Amhara, and the Oromo Liberation Army—have formed a coalition aimed at overthrowing the federal government and paving the way for a transitional administration.

This alliance has emerged at a time when Abiy Ahmed’s government is grappling with simultaneous armed conflicts in several regions and a resurgence of tension in Tigray.

On Sunday, Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted Emmanuel Assefa, deputy head of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), as saying that negotiations to form this coalition had been underway for over a year and that the Fano leader would assume command. Armed groups from the Somali, Afar, Ogaden, and Benishangul-Gumuz regions are also part of this alliance.

Federal forces have been in conflict with the Oromo Liberation Army since 2018 and with Fano since 2023. With a population of over 40 million, Oromia is Ethiopia's most populous region; the ranks of the Oromo Liberation Army—estimated at a few thousand in 2018—have grown in recent years. Addis Ababa designates the group as a terrorist organization.

Fano took up arms against the government following a decision in April 2023 to disarm its forces and primarily conducts guerrilla operations in rural areas.

Meanwhile, in recent weeks, the federal government has targeted military positions in Tigray with drones and accused regional officials of being close to armed groups—including Fano—as well as Eritrea.

However, there are divisions among the members of the coalition. Fano fought alongside federal forces during the Tigray War from 2020 to 2022, and the Amhara and Tigray regions remain in dispute over Western Tigray.

هەروەها فانۆ چەکی دژ بە حکومەت هەڵگرت دوای ئەوەی حکومەت لە مانگی نیسانی ٢٠٢٣ بڕیاریدا چەکداماڵینی ئەو گروپە و ماوەیەکە بە شێوەیەکی سەرەکی لە ناوچە گوندنشینەکاندا ئۆپەراسیۆنی گەریلا ئەنجام دەدات.

لەلایەکی دیکەوە حکومەتی فیدراڵی لە چەند هەفتەی ڕابردوودا پێگە سەربازییەکانی لە تیگرای بە فڕۆکەی بێفڕۆکەوان کردۆتە ئامانج و دەسەڵاتدارانی ناوچەکەی تۆمەتبار کردووە بەوەی کە لە گروپە چەکدارەکان نزیکن، لەنێویاندا فانۆ، هەروەها ئێریتریا.

بەڵام لە نێوان ئەندامانی هاوپەیمانیدا دووبەرەکی هەیە. فانۆ لە ساڵی ٢٠٢٠ تا ٢٠٢٢ شانبەشانی هێزەکانی فیدراڵی لە جەنگی تیگرایدا شەڕی کردووە و تا ئێستاش ئەمهارا و تیگرای لەسەر ڕۆژئاوای تیگرای ناکۆکییان لەسەرە.
