European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the Leipzig incident involved “military-grade material” and was carried out by “Russian operatives on European Union soil.” Her warning was blunt: “We will not tolerate it.”
Von der Leyen said the attack could have caused enormous damage and even loss of life had it succeeded. And if Moscow’s goal was to scare Europe away from supporting Ukraine, she said it had “only strengthened my resolve,” adding: “Intimidation will not work.”
But she went further, calling Leipzig a “new escalation” and part of a wider pattern of drones, airspace incursions and attacks on critical infrastructure.
Her warning to Europe: “This is the new normal.” Everyday infrastructure, she said, now needs to be treated like a potential frontline target. Standing alongside NATO chief Mark Rutte, von der Leyen vowed Europe and NATO will not simply maintain pressure on Moscow, “we will increase it.”
