At midnight on September 5, 2007, eight fighter jets took off from the Hatzerim and Ramon military bases, flew toward the Deir ez-Zor region—located 450 kilometers northwest of Damascus—and dropped 18 tons of munitions on the Al-Kibar nuclear reactor.
Israel has acknowledged that, 11 years ago, it bombed a Syrian nuclear reactor located within Syrian territory.
On Thursday, the Israeli military released evidence showing that in September 2007, it had launched an airstrike against—and destroyed—a "secret" nuclear site in Syria.

Until now, there was little doubt that the destruction of the nuclear site in eastern Syria was Israel's doing; however, this marks the first time the Israeli government has openly admitted to the attack. Israel made this public by releasing documents that had recently been declassified.

In the released documents, the Israeli military detailed the events leading up to the bombing. At midnight on September 5, 2007, eight fighter jets took off from the Hatzerim and Ramon military bases, flew toward the Deir ez-Zor region—located 450 kilometers northwest of Damascus—and dropped 18 tons of munitions on the Al-Kibar nuclear reactor.
Israel's Intelligence Minister described the bombing of the Syrian nuclear reactor as a message sent to "others." Israel Katz, the Intelligence Minister, wrote on his Twitter account: "The message of this operation and its success is that Israel will never allow nuclear weapons to fall into the hands of those who pose a threat to the country. The threat back then was Syria, whereas today, it is Iran that threatens Israel." Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman stated that the destruction of the nuclear site in the Deir ez-Zor region conveyed a "message" to other Middle Eastern nations. Lieberman added, "The capabilities of Israel's air force, military, and intelligence services have advanced significantly since 2007. It is in the interest of every country in the Middle East to take this side of the equation into account."

According to the released materials, Israel used F-16 and F-15 aircraft to bomb the unfinished Al-Kibar nuclear facility near Deir ez-Zor on September 6, 2007. The attack made headlines internationally and became a subject of analysis and debate among American politicians; however, Israeli officials chose to remain silent on the matter to avoid triggering a regional war with Syria.
The released materials include video footage, photographs, and intelligence documents detailing the operation. Israel claims that the Al-Kibar nuclear reactor was being constructed with North Korean assistance and was only months away from becoming operational.

The disclosure of these documents follows an escalation in Benjamin Netanyahu's rhetoric and his calls for the international community to adopt a tougher stance against Iran. On Wednesday, March 21, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said, "Our enemies' motivation has increased in recent years. However, it must be noted that the resolve of the Israel Defense Forces has grown to an equal degree."

Syria, a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), denies Israel's claim that the facility was a nuclear reactor. In a statement, the Israeli military noted that the Deir ez-Zor region had repeatedly fallen under ISIS control during the seven-year Syrian war, and that the presence of this reactor could have "posed profound strategic problems for Syria, Israel, and the entire Middle East."
