The Islamic Republic of Iran Could Remain in Place in Exchange for Oil Deliveries
US President Donald Trump stated that if the United States decides to stay in Iran, it might take control of the country's oil, much like it did in Venezuela. He noted that revenue from Venezuelan oil had covered the costs of the war many times over.
Trump also remarked that a war with Iran could conclude either before the US midterm elections in November or immediately afterward.
During a visit to Ireland, the US President announced that Iran is eager for a deal with Washington and is constantly reaching out for negotiations; however, he emphasized that he would not accept an agreement that failed to meet US terms.
Trump stated that Iran must reach a proper agreement, adding that he would not strike a bad deal with Tehran. He reiterated that the US would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.
Trump’s remarks came as Badr Albusaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, announced on Sunday the postponement of a regional meeting between Iran and Persian Gulf states that had been scheduled for Monday in Salalah. No new date has been announced for the meeting.
Oman had organized the meeting to address regional issues—foremost among them the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and proposals regarding the regulation of maritime traffic.
Reuters reported that foreign ministers from regional countries and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were slated to attend.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters that the Salalah meeting was not expected to result in a signed agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz; rather, it was intended to review proposals and related regional issues.
The official stated that Tehran seeks arrangements that would allow it to collect tolls from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Reuters, Oman opposes this proposal. Bahrain had also announced that it would not participate in a collective meeting attended by Tehran prior to the restoration of diplomatic relations with Iran, though it had emphasized its support for Oman's efforts and its commitment to dialogue and freedom of navigation.
