What is driving the advance of Yemen's Houthis, and why is Saudi Arabia faltering?
On Friday, September 11, Iran-backed Houthi forces seized the coastal city of Dhubab in Taiz Governorate and the strategic island of Perim (Mayun) in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, thereby expanding their control over this vital waterway.

 

A local official told AFP that boats carrying armed Houthi fighters arrived on Perim Island after government forces withdrew on Thursday. The island sits in the middle of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, dividing it into two shipping lanes.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that by capturing Perim Island, the Houthis have gained control over the Bab al-Mandab area.

An eyewitness reported the deployment of armed Houthi forces along the Bab al-Mandab coast and the movement of their military vehicles in the area.

Hundreds of people have been killed since the Houthis launched operations around Bab al-Mandab. The strait is a vital route for Saudi Arabia's oil exports.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia conducted two airstrikes on the port city of Mocha's airport on Friday, September 11.

Al-Masirah, a Houthi-affiliated network, reported that the airport had been targeted twice by Saudi airstrikes.

On Thursday, Iran-backed Houthi forces seized control of the Red Sea port city of Mocha following a major offensive against Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces.

 Yahya Saree, the military spokesman for the Houthi militia, announced that the group had targeted a military base in the Sharurah region of southern Saudi Arabia during an operation. He did not provide further details regarding exactly when the attacks took place.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the spokesman for the Houthis—who are considered a proxy force of the Islamic Republic in the region—stated that the operation targeted "weapons and ammunition depots as well as a command and control center" responsible, according to him, for "directing aggression against the people of Yemen."

Meanwhile, Saudi officials reported on the evening of Sunday, September 12, that two people had been wounded in Jazan (located in southern Saudi Arabia near the Yemeni border) after being struck by a Houthi projectile.

Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense authority also announced that a mosque, along with several buildings and vehicles, sustained damage due to the Houthi projectile strike in the Jazan region. The Saudi government had issued a warning regarding potential Houthi attacks shortly before the incident occurred.
